Proposed Waste Management Unit
IMPORTANT PUBLIC NOTICE - Lack of Due Process
North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) are proposing to build a large scale Waste Management Unit in North Yorkshire, to include the transfer, recycling treatment and incineration of waste. They have listed 7 possible sites. Dalton Industrial Estate is the first-named on the list and is the largest site. The information is contained in NYCC Minerals & Waste Development Framework - see NYCC website details below.
The consultation period started on 12th November and was scheduled to finish 24th Decembeer 2007. (This week it was extended to 11th January 2008!!)
Word of the possible development leaked out during the weekend of 9/9th December. A rapidly-organised open meeting was arranged for 12th December in Dalton Village Hall. Around 200 local parishioners packed into the hall. Two officials from NYCC attended the meeting and they stated that the Council had sent out 12 letters about the proposal. We understand these were sent to commerical units on the industrial estate.
No householders in the parishes of Dalton/Sessay/Asenby/Sowerby/Topcliffe or Thirsk were given direct notification by NYCC.
The NYCC employees said that adverts had been put in the local press and that 313,000 leaflets had been distributed to North Yorkshire residents to make them aware of the proposals and to solicit feedback. We have not yet met anyone who received a leaflet in the period before the consultation period started.
We surmise that the employees were referring to the NYCC publication: N.Y. Times There were no references to the proposal in either the October or November issues. The subject should have been included in the October issue so that the public could consider in time for the start of the consultation period.
If you are worried about the proposed plans and the lack of information promoted to the local population please consider
a) Visiting the NYCC website www.northyorks.gov.uk and search for 'preferred options for 'Waste Site Allocations' where you can obtain a response form.
b) If you think you have expertise that could be of value please attend a steering committee meeting on Sunday 6th January at 7.00pm in the Dalton Village Hall. If you want a hard copy of the response form then please pick one up from the Village Hall at the above time.
You may be worried about
- the damage this will do to the local business community and the lacal farming industry
- the lack of DUE PROCESS
- possible emissions from the incineration plant carried by the prevailing winds. Dalton, Topcliffe and Asenby are within the critical 2 km radius for emissions.
- the possibility of toxins entering the water system. There is a redundant borehole in the earmarked land
- A 70m high chimney stack with consequent air turbulence at the end of the Topcliffe and Dishforth runways with an increase of birds within the local military flight path
- damage to the local tourism and leisure industry
- significant increase in haulage traffic and their emissions
- increased noise, smell dust
- increased vermin population. We will receive rubbish from the larger heavily populated areas with no local benefits!!!
- the close proximity of the water table, Cod Beck and regular flooding of the lcal are
The food industry will not allow an organic carrot to enter the food chain produced within 25 kilometers of a Waste incideration plant!! What does that tell you? Please tell everyone you think may be affected. You have a right to be informed.
If you wish to receive council objection forms and a list of people to complain to, please email;-
